Cheyenne Wells Landspout

2015-01-29 By Roger Edwards

From underneath otherwise innocuous looking towering cumulus clouds sprang forth this "landspout" tornado, so called by storm spotters because its appearance is similar to tornadoes over water (waterspouts). One of three that occurred in a ten minute span from these towers, this was the only one with good, sharp definition. We were cruising W along US 40 in extreme eastern Colorado, watching a … [Read more...]

Hail Fog in New Mexico

2015-01-29 By Roger Edwards

Hail fog forms when the air just above it experiences direct ("sensible") cooling, as the ice brings already high-humidity air near the surface to saturation, condensing the moisture into fog.  Between the melting hail and the temporary flooding from heavy-rain runoff, these thirsty trees took a welcomed water break from the antecedent severe drought afflicting the area. DFW Airport Fog

2015-01-29 By Roger Edwards

Sometimes serene and beautiful, fog takes on a sinister side when it comes to aviation, leading to economic losses on a daily basis somewhere around the world, and on occasion, casualties from related plane crashes. Floral Flow

2015-01-29 By Roger Edwards

Waters from the rapidly rising Skunk River rose into the bottom of an overhanging elderberry bush, the swift current flowing through the blooms, a symbolic juxtaposition of renewal and destruction in the springtime. Story City IA (8 Jun 8) Looking NE 42.1877, -93.5849 … [Read more...]

Sail Away

2015-01-29 By Roger Edwards

Seemingly alone on the vast ocean, a solo sailboat rode the gentle marine breezes into the twilight sky off the coast of southwest Florida. A rather hazy sky muted and diffused the warm tones of long-path refraction in the near-horizon atmospheric layers, softening the scene and accentuating its serenity. Sanibel FL (30 Dec 8) Looking WSW 26.4498, -82.1426 … [Read more...]
