Flying over the Ohio River below Evansville, along the border of Indiana (left) and Kentucky (right and top), reveals truths of geology and a metaphor for life. As the newly risen, golden sunlight reflects off the river and riparian wetlands, we see prior courses and old banks marked in the arcs: the closer they are to the current stream, the newer the curving sediment deposits. Left to its own … [Read more...]
Sterling Double Rainbow
Departing and weakening clusters of previously severe storms decorated the sky over central Kansas with a glorious double rainbow, in the waning minutes of daylight. This is the time of afternoon when sky and land colors get warmer, and rainbows' angles are steepest off the ground, thanks to the proximity of sun to horizon. Contrast this with an early/mid-afternoon rainbow, barely after the sun … [Read more...]
Stratocumulus from Beneath
Drifting placidly over the marsh grasses of Everglades National Park, broad, soft tufts of stratocumulus ride the southeasterly winds from the Caribbean across Cuba and the Straits of Florida. Twilight on a Northern Lake

That layer, with some forested salad, nicely formed the contents of a blue-bun burger, a delicious and satisfying visual feast, devoid of calories or grease for thoroughly guilt-free consumption as long as it lasted. This serene summertime scene … [Read more...]
Storm Base under Mammatus
This high-based supercell—with much more rotation in midlevels than at cloud base—had been fighting its own outflow for nearly an hour after separating itself from the storm cluster in which it formed, well west of Plainview. Still, it offered a temporarily improving organization at this stage, beneath some of the largest mammatus pouches I have seen. A lot of mass of gas was being processed in … [Read more...]
