Mammatus and Shadow

2026-09-04 By Roger Edwards

Mammatus and Shadow
[Part 1 of 2]  An outflow-dominant supercell merged with some other storms, and the resulting complex blasted SSE past me, blowing itself out, save for one newer supercell that was unreachable.  So with some time to kill before sunset, I settled in for a quick meal on the back side, then headed out for this quite pleasant sunset scene in the rolling hills, cornfields and rain-cooled summer air of eastern Iowa.  The earthy aroma here after heavy rain is much different, but no less pleasant and relaxing, than what I’ve often noticed in much drier climates and landscapes.  The shadow cutting across the mammatus came from an elevated tower directly behind me, to the WNW, and is shown in Part 2.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
