“Ground Scraping” Scud

2026-09-11 By Roger Edwards

"Ground Scraping" Scud
Cool, moist air surged outward (leftward) from a newer rain foot at right, intersecting slower-moving outflow from a more distant part of the core behind the scud.  With saturated air, relative humidity at 100%, at ground level in the outflow surge, lifting of that air into a drier environment just above only gradually eroded the fractocumulus scud, in fragments and turrets.  The scud made a fine marker for where the lift was strongest within the outflow current.  Ultimately, the surge  traveled far enough and mixed sufficiently with surrounding air to reduce the humidity below saturation levels and disperse the scud.  Horizontal swirls within such scud sometimes provide the illusion of a tornado, but are not connected to any rotation in the cloud base above and, like their closely related gustnado counterparts, tend to dissipate quickly without direct stretching from the storm-scale updraft.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
