Exactly one year before, the photo here would have been much different, and not legally possible. The notorious South Rim Fire was toasting vegetation along the south rim of the Black Canyon, causing the park to be evacuated and closed. On the 10th, a dry thunderstorm’s CG lightning activity ignited that and at least ten other fires. Though no people were killed, nonhuman casualties included young and old trees along the canyon’s edge, such as these less than a mile south of the main visitor’s center for the national park.
