The last storm and sunset I would see from this roof as an employee turned out to be the most striking and memorable of them all. Sweeping across the fall sunset sky from northwest to east, this astonishing supercell pulled a deep wall cloud and convection-topped rear-flank shelf through the sunset’s golden rays, presenting a scene that stunned all eyewitnesses. From up here on the roof of the National Weather Center, a.k.a. Battlestar Norman, the storm itself looked alien, sent from some strange and unknown world of a different galaxy. The “little” cluster of buildings on the horizon just to the left of center is the main OU campus to the north, including the football stadium, and to its right, the previous location of the OU School of Meteorology (Energy Center). The supercell was dropping severe hail over east Norman at this very moment.
