Wet Canyon Wall
The nearly continual trickle of water down the sandstone walls of this shallow canyon keeps it bare, but for thin swaths of rusty-hued algae. Dissolution of the cementing material between sand grains, and “spalling” as thin slabs of stone that split and fall away from time to time, enrich the texture, especially in the glow of low-angled sunshine spotlighting through the surrounding forest. This was one of several wonders I found while exploring a small creekbed in western Indiana.
