Velkommen
Velkommen…til oversvømmelsen! Story City’s annual Scandinavian festival got cut short by a Sunday flood that divided the town in two, overtopping its main road (Broad Street) near the Skunk River. Fortunately for the town, the waters fell again the next day and no homes got flooded. The story elsewhere in Iowa was more bleak, however; these floodwaters joined those from other streams to form long-lasting, record crests in the southeastern part of the state, then on down the Mississippi River into Missouri and Illinois. While not as widespread as the 1993 floods (also shown in this gallery), the 2008 event did break ’93 records in some areas (most famously including Cedar Rapids).
