Vault CG

2019-04-07 By Roger Edwards

Vault CG

As a spectacular low-precipitation (LP) supercell continued to spin away into the deepening nightfall, it occasionally erupted with a wonderful lightning display. The first was cloud-to-air, this one cloud-to-ground. The stroke here originated atop the visual vault region of the storm: a notoriously productive area for lightning thanks to the intense air motions, rapid charge separation, and intermingling of ice and supercooled liquid phases of precipitation that happen up there. Along the way down, a branch of the step leader had tickled the edge of the rotating cloud column with a flick of electricity, lit up brilliantly once the ground surge ignited both the main channel and all its branches.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
