Trail’s End
The Yampa and Green Rivers meet next to Steamboat Rock, a striking landmark as viewed from water level. The rivers have carved winding courses through the high plateau of northwestern Colorado, millions of years in the making, exposing sedimentary rocks that sometimes contains dinosaur bones and other fossils. From those arose Dinosaur National Monument, and to this we journeyed to find solitude, solace, and fascination. Though a campground exists at this river bend, few people were around; this landmark resides across from a natural amphitheater of high cliffs, at the end of a long, tortuous, sometimes impassible dirt road. The journey takes time and patience but is well worth the trouble for the sounds of gentle beezes, gently rushing river water, and a cacophony of bird songs echoing off the canyon walls.
