Thunderless Mammatus

2015-04-29 By Roger Edwards

"Thunderless" Mammatus Sometimes mammatus clouds don’t arise from a thunderstorm.  In this case, a dense chunk of cirrostratus clouds developed pronounced bags of mammati, probably with internal motions and processes similar to those in thunderstorm anvils (which also are thick cirrostratus plumes).  The technical name for mammatus clouds associated with a thunderstorm is cumulonimbus mammatus; so for consistency this should be cirrostratus mammatus.  The metal dish is the old NSSL Doppler radar antenna, which for three decades transmitted and received some of the most valuable research data ever gathered in meteorology.  It now resides as an outdoor exhibit a few hundred feet from its former domed home. About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
