Temporary Falls, Mt. Rainier

2025-08-17 By Roger Edwards

Temporary Falls, Mt.Rainier
One of our most photogenic Mount Rainier-area waterfalls was unplanned, unexpected…and unnamed!  Some ad-hoc exploration on a damp, sporadically rainy afternoon led us up a side road and hiking trail as far as the road would go, and right past this waterfall with no name on a small, intermittent brook feeding into Fish and Tahoma Creeks (and ultimately, the Nisqually River).   A couple days of prior rain atop an already wet summer, with plenty of area snowmelt, insured good flow for many typically dry or trickling water paths in the area, and a delicately beautiful lacework of a cascade here.  Photographic conditions were ideal for a waterfall too:  overcast and wet (in light rain), ensuring even light diffusion and muted light levels to optimize a short time exposure.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
