Supercellular Independence
A well-developed, somewhat outflow-driven but still surface-based supercell churned across many miles of Nebraska Panhandle grasslands, its ragged wall cloud (center) sometimes rotating very enticingly but never producing a confirmed tornado. We had observed this one for a rather long time from a parking area on a high spot overlooking the North Platte valley, but this would be our last good view as it passed beyond the buttes leading into the Sandhills. Storms don’t care a whit about road networks, town locations, or convenience of eyewitnesses observation; they track where they will independently of our wishes for either ideal spotting or avoidance of population centers. Fortunately, even though this storm was headed into an unfriendly road void and out of reach for continued close viewing, that also meant a long trek across open, sparsely inhabited countryside with minimal risk for casualties.
