This amazing sunset scene was a story of perseverance amidst deep disappointment. Believe it or not, I had to force myself to appreciate it. While my two-vehicle caravan was busting, watching towers fizzle on a boundary 90 miles to the south in seemingly a better environment, this supercell formed and soon produced a spectacular little tornado, followed by an amazing structure show. We finally threw in the towel and headed north to Lubbock for dinner, only to find this storm still going as the sun was about to set (and visible in the distance across the city). Despite the frustration of missing most of the spectacle this storm’s lifespan offered, I’m still glad we blew off dinner for another hour or so to get north of town and watch this wondrous low-precipitation (LP) storm spiral its vaporous contents into sunset-splashed mammatus and gorgeous structure. Seeing the finale beat missing the whole show!
