Deeply zooming in to the farthest areas near the horizon restricts the view of a sunset to the sector of sky with the very warmest tones, here lining and silhouetting an armada of cumulus and stratocumulus clouds. Cloud analogs to Baily’s beads carved up the apparent sun into chunks, further accentuating the otherworldly aura of the scene. Meanwhile, vertical bars of cloud material just above the horizon were distortions produced by refraction.
