As they often do, one of my favorite scenes of the 2022 storm season happened by chance. While I cruised north on a good dirt road, toward a closer view of a young, deep supercell, this wonderful pair of abandoned schoolhouses appeared in an open, green field off to the right. The scene not just beckoned—it practically begged and screamed—for me to stop for appreciative photography. Frontlit from the south, with the dark, large and ominous storm base looming above, the entire view evoked an imaginary Great Plains story spanning generations, a tale woven of fictional details within generalized reality, compiled from decades’ worth of educated guesses. Thanks to outstanding craftsmanship in their construction, the one-room buildings only gradually yield to the elements, facing winter and summer storms year after year, but for how long?
