The swimming hole at the north end of Ramrod Key has relatively sheltered water for reflective views, thanks to some surrounding mangroves and the structure of the nearby Florida Bay bathymetry. When not occupied by bloodsucking insects or drunk people, it is a quiet, relatively secluded area and good place to observe sunsets in the lower Keys. Briefly, this was no exception. For just a minute or two, I was able to soak in a marvelous, joy-inducing scene of colorful air and water to close out the day. What the image doesn’t convey is the horde of hard-biting “no-see-ums” that was starting to descend upon me here, despite also soaking in DEET-based mosquito spray. Those mean little critters, which I don’t often encounter in the Keys, just didn’t care, and compelled me to relocate elsewhere for the last stage of the sunset.
