Prairie Lake Reflections
Sources of night light abound here: a vehicle’s headlights passing across the right far side of the lake, a bright complex of grain elevators in the distant left, and of course…atmospheric electricity! Car camping was my preferred mode of “social distancing” and avoiding people and their bodily residue, as part of strategic storm-observing travel during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. This quiet, secluded little lake on the South Dakota prairie was my favorite camping spot of the lot of them. I fell asleep to the sounds of frogs and crickets, with flashing of distant lightning from these receding storms, and awoke to a fresh, gentle, cool breeze just behind a front, with Great Plains birds singing joyously after dawn.
