Onomea Falls: Quintessential Hawaii
Epitomizing paradise, these marvelous little falls help to drain the rainier east side of the Big Island, cutting past ferns and palms in a tropical botanical garden that was developed around them. The water reaches the Pacific Ocean just a few minutes afterward. Now picture, eyes closed, the soothing, steady sound of this cascade, under a cacophony of chirps, trills and squawks from many different Hawaiian birds, and occasional crashing of distant surf audible through the dense forest. It was a natural lullaby unique to my experience. Though the gardens and the entire island offer countless much to see, I spent several minutes, could have spent hours, simply sitting here in a state of daydreaming, appreciative serenity.
