One Kilauea Sunrise

2025-11-12 By Roger Edwards

One Kilauea Sunrise
Of all the sunrises and sunsets I’ve seen, this was the most fully irreproducible:  A nearly 1,000-foot volcanic fountain aglow, sending lava across the caldera floor, below a deep-convective column 20 times its height.  The plume thrust upward then downwind with purpose, well into the rays of both the rising sun and the south Hawaii Island radar.  A peculiar spike at right, made of the combination of noxious fumes, dust and water-cloud condensation, marked the top of an inversion layer that the convective column tilted upward with inward extent.  In this wide-angle view, the eruption looks farther than it was, and I clearly heard its tornado-like roar.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
