On a fine Dallas twilight, Reunion Tower's new LED light show sporadically displayed a geodesic-dome rendition of the American flag, while the downtown Omni Hotel did its usual psychedelic color dance, all reflected off Trinity River floodwaters. This unusual shot was the culmination of a great evening of observing and photography downstream and upriver from the Sylvan Avenue bridge. Dallas TX … [Read more...]
Horse Attitudes
While we observed the wonderfully lit scene of an onrushing gust front, these friendly horses came over for some company—and in one case, a much-craved scratching of the forehead. Their casual mood and ours each would change abruptly within minutes, and from prior experience with this storm, we knew it. A blustery plume of dirt and grit carried by the leading edge of the outflow slammed through … [Read more...]
Morrill Story
This high-based storm and its outflow chased us from south of Lusk, WY, across much of the Nebraska Panhandle, and eventually into northeast Colorado. When it still young, the storm's cold downdraft winds hoisted a beautiful arcus cloud, shown here. The ground was so unusually well-lit because of a large truck stop behind me. Conveniently, the cool, … [Read more...]
Lake Superior Moonrise

[The photographer somehow defied hundreds of voracious mosquitoes; but that's another story altogether!] The band of moonlight bouncing off the water's surface is actually a composite of reflections from thousands of small waves; if this were a movie, you would see glimmering on the water. The … [Read more...]
Just Water under the Bridge
Flood waters running hard toward the Missouri River upwelled ominously along the downstream side of the same railroad trestle seen at right in an earlier photo. The bridge shook, rumbled and gently swayed at the time of this image, but never collapsed. 1 SE Farley MO (10 Jul 93) Looking S 39.2737, -94.8274 … [Read more...]
