More Direct Sunrise Color

2023-01-01 By Roger Edwards

More Direct Sunrise Color

One of the year’s most spectacular sunrises happened not in the Great Plains, but surprisingly, along the Maine coast.  This was a protracted event too, much to the delight of all eyewitnesses.  The pre-sunrise indirect colors hinted at the direct red brilliance to come; then it went orange and offered this.  Small, dot-like cloud elements at upper left are just the sunlit lower tips of altocumulus undulatus that poke below shadows of clouds to their east, but the appear as standalone ghosts of light.  A faint sun pillar also appeared about 1/3 of the way across the view from the left.   Soon, with the sun up, the cloud base would glow with color again, from light reflected off the ocean surface.  Have you yet seen the two flying geese silhouetted at uppermost right?

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
