Gently rippled waters reflected a variety of cirrus levels, both silhouetted and illuminated by sunset light along the Downeast Maine coastline. Mount Desert Narrows—forming an erratic strait between the like-named island on which I stood, and the mainland a few miles distant—opens here into the northern part of Western Bay, often quiet water belying the tumult of the nearby coastlines fronting the open Atlantic. Overnight flights from cities down the East Coast to Europe often pass over coastal Maine around local sunset, leaving northeast-trending contrails such as the one at upper left. I have been on a couple such flights, looking down at the shorelines I would visit someday. Finally, I was in the reverse position, also greatly appreciating the beauty and serenity of this moment following another long day of exploring nearby Acadia National Park.
