Looming Threat

2016-11-06 By Roger Edwards

Looming Threat Loaded with severe winds and small hail, this storm was nearly as menacing as its appearance.  Since childhood, one of my very favorite views of the sky has been this ominous transition from light, cool gray to deep, slate-gray as a severe storm approached, preferably with a booming audio accompaniment.  Where others became frightened and prone to hide or flee, I was attracted like a moth to light, in this case storm light.  Stick an urban foreground in front of a scene such as this, where all one sees is the darkening sky through trees and buildings, while streetlights come on in the darkening gloom, and the fascinating mystery deepens for a kid in love with violent weather.   Even today, armed with a scientific understanding of this process that strips away factual uncertainty of what is to come, the looming aura of the scene grips me as much as ever. 1 N Lexington OK (29 Apr 16) Looking W 35.0294, -97.3387

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
