Looming Threat
Loaded with severe winds and small hail, this storm was nearly as menacing as its appearance. Since childhood, one of my very favorite views of the sky has been this ominous transition from light, cool gray to deep, slate-gray as a severe storm approached, preferably with a booming audio accompaniment. Where others became frightened and prone to hide or flee, I was attracted like a moth to light, in this case storm light. Stick an urban foreground in front of a scene such as this, where all one sees is the darkening sky through trees and buildings, while streetlights come on in the darkening gloom, and the fascinating mystery deepens for a kid in love with violent weather. Even today, armed with a scientific understanding of this process that strips away factual uncertainty of what is to come, the looming aura of the scene grips me as much as ever.
