Late Winter at Upper Cataract Falls
The winter of 2020 wasn’t cold enough to keep these waterfalls frozen into late February, offering a nicely hydrodynamic scene that was most welcomed after a morning spent on airplanes. Light snow was falling at this time, accumulations gathering in the background forest floor, with intermittent heavier bursts from a passing “clipper” disturbance. Yet for the snowfall, conditions were remarkably tolerable even for a man of lower latitudes, with temperatures barely below freezing, and light to calm wind. This is the largest waterfall in Indiana by volume (not height), sending Mill Creek over limy sandstone (or sandy limestone) ledges with a characteristically refreshing water roar. One could spend hours here in appreciation and relaxing exploration, and with a covered bridge also located nearby, I definitely did.
