Lake Superior Moonrise

2015-06-08 By Roger Edwards

Lake Superior MoonriseIn a tranquil scene defying Lake Superior’s harsh reputation, the lake mirrors the rising summer moon.  [The photographer somehow defied hundreds of voracious mosquitoes; but that’s another story altogether!]  The band of moonlight bouncing off the water’s surface is actually a composite of reflections from thousands of small waves; if this were a movie, you would see glimmering on the water.  The transition in the reflection band farther offshore marks the edge of a zone of waves of much different size and/or dominant phase, the waves in the gap being configured such that the reflection is not seen from this angle. Experienced sailors use clues like this to alert them to changes in wind or sea state.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
