Kilauea Firehose

2025-10-12 By Roger Edwards

Kilauea Firehose
Just before the crack of dawn, Kilauea’s “Episode 33” eruptive pulse, which mainly had been pumping out a skyscraper-sized fountain from the northern of two active vents, began pouring lava across the crater floor from the south vent (behind the fountain), in two streams:  far left and rightmost.  Meanwhile, the fountaining north vent also overflowed at ground level in two directions of its own, seen at near left and near right.  Some of the cumulative incandescence, produced at temperatures up to about 2,200°F, reflected off the southwest wall of the crater at right.  Meanwhile, even at over a mile away (this being shot with a zoom lens), a tornado-like roar resonated from thousands of glowing-hot rocks and boulders constantly slamming into the surface and colliding with each other in the fountain.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
