Instantly Identified Tornado Transport

2023-03-14 By Roger Edwards

Instantly Identified Tornado Transport

[Part 1 of 3]  The morning after the 26 February east Norman tornado, whose northwest (weak) side crossed our property, I found this sign piece with an unmistakable origin:  a Sinclair gas station up the path a couple miles from our place.   The source was obvious immediately, with the top portions of the “l” and “a” visible.  It had been dislodged, broken, swirled around the vortex an unknown number of times, and deposited here, all within the span of about two minutes that the tornado took to travel that many miles.  Because the vortex raced along at Interstate highway speeds, the winds on its backside were over 100 miles an hour weaker than on its forward side.  We had some tree damage, as well as shingles and small branches deposited from places to our east and southeast…and this longer traveler.  Several days later, I put the piece back where I found it for this shot.  [Go to Part 2]

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
