Indirect Sunrise Color

2022-12-03 By Roger Edwards

Indirect Sunrise Color

This would become a spectacular sunrise over Mount Desert Island, but was well on its way even here.  The sun still was below the horizon, even from the perspective of the altocumulus and altostratus cloud deck’s underside!  So how did it redirect such a rusty, chocolate-red tint?  This was all indirect light, reflected from distant, unseen, directly lit clouds over the horizon and far out over the Atlantic, that I knew existed only from this evidence at first, affirmed by a quick phone-app peek at a satellite loop.   As in a post-sunset chocolate mammatus scene from the Texas Panhandle a few years before, the coloration was eerie in dim light, brightened by several seconds of time exposure.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
