Approaching tropical cyclones often offer some of the most spectacular sunsets, as their richly textured upper-level cloud shields spread over the countryside and bask in the glow of the last evening rays. Hermine was no exception, a system weakening from tropical storm to depression over central Texas at the time of the shot. The moisture that made these brilliantly reflective clouds originated as warm vapors hundreds of miles to the south, over the Gulf of Mexico, processed upward through the tropical storm and northward in an anticyclonically curving outflow channel far aloft, casting a long plume of high clouds overhead.
