Heat Flow

2022-01-09 By Roger Edwards

Heat Flow

Two thousand degrees and flowing while glowing, “eruption 61g” lava further coated the Big Island’s Kalapana plain, radiating more than enough heat to keep observers warm on a cool winter morning a few hundred feet above, and a couple miles upslope from, the tropical Pacific.  With dawn’s brightening light, the various flowing and cooled breakouts made a truly “lava-ly landscape“.   Over a few thousand years, as Kilauea eruptions shift their flows to lower ground elsewhere, the hot harshness and sharp rocks will cool, weather and smooth, and colonizing plants will occupy new soil, ultimately yielding to grasses, then bushes, then trees.  Growing biomes on deepening soil will resemble the more heavily vegetated, jungle-like areas still further uphill.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
