Glacial Sunrise: Mt. Rainier

2020-04-12 By Roger Edwards

Glacial Sunrise: Mt. Rainier

On this cool Cascade Mountain morning, the intricately textured glacial ice that caps Mt. Rainier spectacularly reflected the earliest direct sunlight of the day, while surrounding countryside remained silhouetted in shadow. Ice cliffs more squarely facing the sun, of course, reflected more of the sunrise back at us, accentuating the glaciers’ crumpled, rugged form. A short, tripodded time exposure, with a deep zoom length and high f-stop, worked together to drink the fullness of color while keeping near and far in focus. Luck helped too: a calm interlude in an otherwise lightly breezy morning kept trees still long enough.  Several minutes later, the wind picked up again, but the less-reddened, more yellow sunlight still reflected wonderfully off ice and water.

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
