[Part 4 of 4] Following the passage of the gust front, the squall line raged forth with sustained winds above 50 mph and, at the nearby airport, hurricane-force gusts that broke tree limbs, even in a place well accustomed to intense winds from thunderstorms and other causes. This caused the lowest of the two flags, directly in front of a car wash where I was sheltering, to stand up horizontally while ripping and whipping its ends furiously. The gasoline sign in the background swung back and forth along its pole’s axis, while the streetlights swayed. This turned Hill City into Core City, a position not rare in these parts. Severe hail soon began, near and even behind the linear core’s axis. Soon afterward, I would be enjoying nice Mexican dinner across the street, then heading for a motel about half an hour to the south. Back to Part 1.
