Embedded Rotation
A small supercell formed in a pocket of favorably unstable air, right at the southern rim of favorable deep shear, but quickly became nearly surrounded by other storms. Regardless of becoming embedded in a bigger storm cluster, the supercell spun strongly at times in middle levels as seen from faraway radars, and tightened up enough in low levels to produce a brief funnel cloud or two, earning a tornado warning that still was valid at the time of this shot. By then, however, the cloud rotation had slowed somewhat, the base rose, and the wall cloud assumed more of a mixture of laminar and convective textures, looking especially marvelous in a wide view such as this with surrounding precip and cloud bases. We enjoyed the display and took our photos mainly from within the vehicle thanks to a flurry of lightning.
