Sometimes serene and beautiful, fog takes on a sinister side when it comes to aviation, leading to economic losses on a daily basis somewhere around the world, and on occasion, casualties from related plane crashes. More commonly, on flight dockets already strained to the limits by over-scheduling, even brief fog episodes at major airports can hurl substantial portions of the national commercial aviation system into a chaotic quagmire of delays, cascading every which way from the source of the problem. Numerous flights left or arrived late this day, including the connection on which I was supposed to depart for Raleigh. It was a good thing, too; for my flight arriving from OKC (and from which this photo was taken) also was late.
