At deep zoom, a delightfully complex cloud mix and landscape below combined to compose a unique sunset scene in the southwestern New Mexico desert. The last of the day’s storms in the region had died away a couple hours before, leaving convective detritus, comfortably cool outflow, and disappointment at lack of lightning-shooting opportunities in the sunset light and beyond. However, that sense of loss was soothed by this brilliant sunset scene illuminating a little window of the western sky. At lower left, a couple plumes of cloud material even took on the visual form of slow-motion flames extending into a small patch of altostratus, rendering a new meaning to “flaming sunset”.
