Chocolate Mammatus in Twilight
Amazing scenes still can be had at the end of High Plains storm days, even with the storms well past, and little or no lightning. Doesn’t this look delicious? An otherworldly hue cast itself across a deck of mammatus clouds, emanating from a weakening area of once-severe thunderstorms to the south and east. Having lost access to direct sunlight, the mammatus instead reflected deep maroon-brown tones, manifesting atmospheric reds from over the horizon, filtered through a long fetch of slightly dusty boundary-layer air. A short time exposure drank in and brought out the tones fully. On several occasions, I’ve seen this sort of coloration to post-sunset mammatus fields, but very rarely to such a sky-covering extent when there’s a good opportunity to pull off and shoot. I’m so glad that chance presented itself here!
