Fascinating and complex processes unfolded in this scene, as a supercell’s slowly rotating wall cloud passed over and beyond the butte just to the left of middle. The very low, perhaps “ground-scraping” right (eastern) part of the wall cloud, located just beyond the ridge, temporarily tightened its rotation a lot. However, it was too difficult to determine with certainty if a tornado spun up in the murk, given that cloud bases already were near ground level, and some terrain blocked the full view. If one did occur, it wasn’t reported by closer observers, as the area affected is roadless ranchland with nothing to damage. Within several minutes, outflow from the supercell would take over, undercutting the mesocyclone (albeit in beautiful ways) and shoving the entire storm eastward across the west-central Montana prairies , ultimately to dissipate.
