This was an extension of the “No Ord-inary Sunset” scene into the sky straight overhead, a few minutes later, quite mesmerizing to behold. The last minutes of sunshine illuminated most (but not all) of a complex, richly textured cloud extension thrusting westward from the backside of a thunderstorm cluster. Various elements in this peculiar protuberance moved different directions, rolling and spreading in slow-motion turbulence, through areas of light and shadow that themselves shifted vertically. Meanwhile the entire formation translated laterally to the northeast (bottom left). Sometimes it’s worth a little neck strain to gaze directly overhead at wondrous processes unfolding in the fluid canvas of the sky! Another look, shortly later, lends some convective context to this zoomed view.
