All the Phases

2018-08-14 By Roger Edwards

Water works wondrous ways in wintertime, especially at a place like Mono Lake that often features all three phases of its existence on earth, at once.  We see the forms of solid ice crystals in the snow and the salt-infused lake liquid, and understand the presence of vapor through condensed cloud material.  Different densities of fluid water exist here too, in the form of warm mineral springs on the lake bottom.  Such springs are the same type that formed the famous tufa towers now marooned above the waterline.  As a photographer, I enjoyed the color contrasts and layering of this scene, especially when clouds temporarily dimmed the glaring sunshine and brought forth a great view of the near-shore lake bottom through the placid water. 5 ESE Lee Vining CA (20 Jan 6) Looking NW 37.9429, -119.027

About

Welcome to SkyPix, an online photo book of clouds, weather and water by Roger Edwards. As in a printed coffee-table book, every image has its own page with a unique story. After all, meaningful photography is much more than just picture-taking; it is visually rendering a moment in place and time from a perspective like none other. As a scientist and an artist, I hope my deep passion for the power and splendor of our skies and waters shines through in these pages. If you are a cloud and weather aficionado, outdoor enthusiast, outdoor or nature photographer, art lover, or anyone who craves learning, enjoy...
